There is a good choice of places to eat & drink in Granada ranging from from American style bar food to fine dining.

The majority of restaurants and bars are near the cathedral and the adjacent paved street, Calle La Calzada.

Here are our recommendations for eating and drinking in Granada:

BREAKFAST:
 

Located close to the cathedral in a beautifully restored colonial house. Cafe Jardin serves great sandwiches, salads, smoothies and of course coffee. Friendly service, hammocks and a beautiful courtyard garden.

LUNCH:

The courtyard at Dona Conchi is a cool respite from the heat and a relaxing place  to enjoy Spanish influenced food with a jug of sangria. Near the Cathedral.

DINNER:

Jardin D'Orion one block behind the cathedral has wonderful French influenced food in a beautiful restored colonial building

ALSO RECOMMENDED:

Jimmy 3 Fingers  has great ribs and .........El Zaguan has probably the best steaks in Nicaragua.

A short taxi ride away from the center of Granada is the excellent Las Colinas del Sur known for its lake bass-'guapote'.

          Convento de San Francisco

The oldest church in Central America was initiated in 1585. It was burned to the ground by William Walker in 1856 and rebuilt in 1867-68.
The convent once served as Walkers headquarters and later as a university, which was shut down by Somoza in 1951. The building is completely restored and is home to probably the areas best museum.


Its main exhibit is the Zapatera statuary: a set of large black statues carved sometime between AD 800 and 1200, discovered on the ancient ceremonial island of Zapatera in the 1880s, and brought to Granada in the 1920's.







                      
            Cathedral de Granada

The Cathedral de Granada, on the east side of the Parque Central, was originally built in 1583 but has been destroyed many times since. This most recent version, built in 1915, has 4 chapels; a dozen stained-glass panels are set into the dome.






              Las Isletas


An archipelago of 365 islands,  formed when Volcán Mombacho erupted some 20,000 years ago, hurling its top half into the nearby lake in giant masses of rock, ash, and lava.
Today, the islands are inhabited by a few hundred campesinos and an increasing number of wealthy Nicaraguans and expats.
The Fortín de San Pablo is a Spanish fort that was built to prevent- unsuccessfully-  pirate attacks on Granada.

Granada is the oldest inhabited city in the Americas with a wealth of beautiful colonial houses and churches.

As the most popular tourist destination in Nicaragua it has plenty of restored boutique hotels and a great selection of good restaurants.

It is also an excellent base for tours to Las Isletas, Volcan Masaya and Volcan Mombacho.
